In Europe，Over 90% electrode material is graphite. Copper was once the mainly material, but now compare with the graphite electrode, it has lost all the advantages.
Advantage of graphite electrode
1. Faster producing speed: In general, the speed of the graphite machining is 2-5 times faster than the copper, and the discharge machining speed is 2-3 times faster .
2. Deformation resistance: Advantage is obvious in producing thin layer electrode.The softening point of the copper is around 1000 ℃, thus the copper is easy to be deformed due to heat.However, the sublimation temperature of the graphite is high to 3650 ℃ and the thermal expansivity is only 1/30 of the copper.
3. Lighter weight: The density of the graphite is only 1/5 of the copper, the burden of the machine can be effectively reduced when using the large EDM electrode.It is more suitable for large model making.
4. Less consumption: When EDM, the C atoms in the spark oil will be released and stick to the surface of the graphite electrode to form a protective slick in high temperature,which compensates the consumption of the graphite electrode.
